1) OPPOSITES ATTRACT
Just like in love, opposites in the color spectrum attract as well. Just take a glance at the wheel above and start matching up some star crossed color lovers. Pink & Green!? Love it. Blue and orange!? Of course.
2) CLASHING IS YOUR FRIEND
Just like romantic partners, the best color partners start out as close friends. So take another looksie at the color wheel and pick a pair side-by-side. Hmmm… how about fuschia and red? At first glance, you may worry they clash, but trust me, it works!
3) OMBRE LOVE
Ombre hair was the hit of the summer. You start off dark on one end, and gradually get lighter towards the other. The end result is subtle and gorgeous. The same theory applies to the clothes you wear. For example, start off with the darkest of navy blues and layer on pieces of varying shades of the same color. Another great tip, is to keep the darkest color on the area of your body you would like to downplay and wear lighter shades on those parts you want to draw attention to.
4) GREY IS THE NEW BLACK
Grey is often the overlooked neutral stepchild. Boy are we missing out! With so many lovely tones of grey out there, you can keep an entire outfit neutral and cozy, or kick it up and pair a gray with an unexpected pop of color- like kelly-green, or even yellow! Since the grey is not as harsh as a traditional black, the end result is both simple and chic.
While prints and patterns are not necessarily a “color” per se, they do allow you to bring a ton of color into your wardrobe. In addition, pairing assorted prints together is another unique way to switch it up. My number one rule when working with prints is to match up a large scale print with a smaller scale, or vice versa. That will keep the eye from getting totally overwhelmed, and keep you from looking totally crazy.
Everyone needs a little more color in their lives, right?
