Given the recent bitter-cold/snow situation here in Cleveland, instead of “5 Cool Ways To Wear A Black Turtleneck Sweater” this post should be titled, “I Will Be Wearing A Turtleneck Sweater Every Day Until May.”
Just keepin’ it real.
Black is my favorite color and yes, it can be pretty boring, BUT when you get creative with proportions and pairings all-black-everything will soon become your favorite winter look when you’re feeling less than inspired.
1. Oversized on top, skinny on the bottom
This is perhaps the easiest to put together look of the bunch as most women already have all of the basics required. Keep your sweater oversized if you’re going to be pairing with slim fitting skinny jeans and leg hugging boots. The monotone look works here because there are so many textures going on: cable knit, denim and glossy boots. No excuses! This outfit needs to be in your rotation.
2. With joggers
Turtleneck: CHELSEA28 // Joggers: GAP (LOVE the heather grey + they’re under $35!) // Ankle-Wrap Sandals: STEVE MADDEN// Coat: KRISTEN BLAKE (such a classic coat for a GREAT price — hurry though, sizes are limited!) // Clutch: CLARE V.
I know some of you have been wary of the jogger style… rightfully so. It’s not the easiest look to pull off if you don’t live a really casual lifestyle or are in an office environment. That being said, trouser/jogger hybrids (like the ones above!) do exist and can be a great addition to your wardrobe. Treat them as you would a traditional dress pant. If the ankle wrap sandal is not practical for you, sub with a HIGH HEEL ANKLE BOOTIE!
3. With a mini
This outfit is one of my favorites! Again, proportion is key. Since the miniskirt leaves the legs exposed, keep the turtleneck looser in fit for visual balance. Just add heavy tights for additional coverage and warmth– these FLEECE LINED TIGHTS are a total winter lifesaver.
4. Borrowed from the boys
Menswear is a great place to draw inspiration, especially in bold black and white. Since trousers tend to have a looser cut, try tucking in your sweater to keep your waistline defined and prevent the outfit from appearing too bulky. Oxfords are a comfortable option for day, while a pair of streamlined BLACK PUMPS can be an easy way to transition to night.
5. Black + White
There really is nothing fresher than a crisp pair of white jeans… any time of year, really. Yes, Elin is wearing white, yes, it’s winter and yes, it’s perfectly seasonal and appropriate. The heavy knit of her black turtleneck sweater combined with her structured wool blazer give basic white jeans a new life. Try it… you’ll
like LOVE it.
