Bump Style

Do you ever have the feeling that everyone around you is pregnant?!

It seems as though out of nowhere, all of these baby bumps just came sprouting out of the woodwork everywhere I look! For most of these mamas this a super exciting and somewhat stressful period in their lives, regardless of whether this is a first child or a 5th.

Perhaps pregnancy hormones have just a little bit to do with that? Just a theory…

With all of the impending changes in a mom-to-be’s life (and body), one thing no pregnant lady should stress about is her bump style. Maternity wardrobes, while a bit overwhelming at first, really are no different than any seasonal capsule wardrobe we create. As long as you begin with a good foundation of pieces, it becomes fun to mix and match and adjust your style with your growing bump. With more and more retailers jumping about the bump style maternity train, there are so many awesome options to pick and choose from. Better yet, NON-maternity clothes can be equally as stylish if worn and sized correctly — so don’t go and abandon your favorite outfits just yet!

Instead, check out the maternity collection I created below… Oh, and even if you’re NOT in a “delicate way,” this wardrobe capsule is great for a bit of late-winter style inspiration AND includes mainstream pieces from all of your favorite stores!

So, what’s included?

A diverse collection of bump-friendly fabrics and cuts in assorted styles that can take you from day to night. From sleek, FAUX LEATHER LEGGINGS (YAAAaassss! They finally make these in maternity sizing!) to my favorite DENIM PINAFORE DRESS, you have so many on-trend choices for the 9 months ahead. Technically, it’s really 10, but we won’t get into that now…

If you’re opting to avoid true maternity wear entirely, you have two plans of attack:

1. Try to stick to cuts that are looser around the mid-section and can accommodate a growing bump for the first 2 trimesters — like the TIE-NECK BLOUSE or the CHUNKY KNIT SWEATER (I just noticed this item is close to selling out… THIS is similar). Even non-maternity sized coats/jackets can be integrated into your wardrobe — the swing-style cut of WOOL PEACOAT (currently on sale and an additional 25% OFF!) and UTILITY JACKET is a pregnant lady’s friend.

2. Embrace the bump and opt for body con, figure skimming tops and dresses like this LONG SLEEVE MATERNITY DRESS in a deep bordeaux. These types of more fitted pieces are definitely a bit daring on their own, but when used a layer for those great jackets mentioned above become much more “user friendly,” not to mention, comfortable.

Lastly, accessories and shoes become an even more critical staple when working with limited wardrobe options — they breathe new life into the outfits you put together and will definitely keep you from getting bored with your maternity choices. For this specific capsule, comfort is key and I tried to stick to versatile no/low/mid-heel styles for added support.

Those TOPSHOP JOLENE MULTI-STRAP PUMPS are awesome, aren’t they!? The subtle pattern is a great way to incorporate additional visual interest into an outfit comprised mostly of basics. I’m obsessed with those CONVERSE HIGH TOPS — the navy, black + white color way is right up my alley.

Pregnant or not, who wouldn’t want to wear these looks?!
