The 10 Essentials I Wear Over + Over

After yesterday’s ICONIC WRAP SWEATER post, I think I’ve learned a good lesson:

When you find something good, share, share, share… because just like that, all that good stuff might sell out!

So in that vain, I wanted to make sure to follow through and share the 10 essentials I wear over + over during the fall and winter months. These are my must-have-can’t-live-without-items that I just find myself relying on to easily get me through the long, cold season ahead…

…in style, of course!

1. Black + white plaid

Remember when I told you about everyone’s LOVE FOR PLAID? Well, I especially love black + white plaid. The clean and graphic design is unfussy and visually appealing without making an outfit too busy. The neutral color palette also makes layering a breeze no matter what your style.

RAILS makes my favorite plaid shirts, but any of these options would be welcome into my wardrobe any day!

2. Leather pants

Leather pants are cool. They make me feel cool. They also make my legs feel warm. All good things! The leather jean, or slim-fit trouser is a nice alternative to denim and an easy way to add a little “oomph” to your style. Any blazer and t-shirt combo paired with a well-fitted leather pant is an instant party ready outfit. Oh, and if you’re not quite ready to take a leather plunge, suede is a slightly less edgy alternative!

My favorite leather pants are by A.L.C. (they’re like buttah’!) but there are plenty of great alternatives at every price point in both natural skin, as well as man-made.

3. Distressed skinny jeans

Everyone loves a good pair of skinnies. I just happen to love mine with a little distressing. I think it adds a bit more visual interest to an outfit, but if distressing is not for you, a great pair of dark wash skinny jeans are a MUST. Try a mid-rise fit for the most sophisticated look and a great way to prevent the dreaded muffin-top.

When asked my favorite designer brand of skinny jeans, I have a really hard time coming up with just one! It truly depends on your body type and individual fit. For curvy figures, my clients all love AG DENIM. If you’re more boyish like me, J.BRAND, RAG & BONE and CITIZENS OF HUMANITY do the trick!

4. Oversized/chunky black cardigan

Cardigans can go frumpy and marm-ish very quickly, so I’m a stickler when it comes to this closet staple. For a youthful take on a classic cardigan, I like a chunky knit in an oversized hip-length silhouette. I found my favorite no-name brand cardigan on a clearance rack at Nordstrom and sized up to get the casual look. If you’re in need of something a little more dressy and work appropriate, a longer cardigan in a refined merino or cashmere is a great option to be worn on it’s own, or belted!

5. Motorcycle jacket

If you know me personally, you know my moto jacket comes with me everywhere. Actually, that should be plural… over the years, I’ve expanded my collection to include a black, camel and red version! I wear my jacket with jeans, I wear it over dresses, I wear it under heavier wool coats in the dead of winter… I basically wear my motorcycle jackets ALL. THE. TIME. I prefer real leather for it’s durability, softness and fit, but there are also many great “pleather” options that are very affordable.

When it comes to brands, I’m not picky — I’m all about fit. I will say that for the price, ASOS has some of the best real leather jackets on the market.

6. Grey broken-in tee

I love t-shirts, you love t-shirts, yes, we all love t-shirts… BUT I really, really love a soft, draped grey t-shirt. The grey is a slightly softer neutral than white or black and it literally, goes with everything.

Ok, so when it comes to my favorite brands for tee– my high end pick would be ENZA COSTA (sooooo luxe!) and my bargain pick would be again, my favorite MOSSIMO JERSEY TEE from Target! Have you tried them yet!?

7. Black camisole/tank

When it comes to dressing up, a great foundation is all you need to elevate the basics. A simple silk shell — whether camisole style with lace and spaghetti straps, or unembellished tank style is something I’m constantly using as a building block for a great outfit. Whether under a blazer, a cardigan or on it’s own, this black camisole is a pretty touch of femininity in your wardrobe.

You will be shocked when you find out where my favorite camisole is from… ready!? H&M!! No one believes me when I tell them, as the cut and lace detail make it appear much more expensive than the under $25 I spend a few years ago.

8. Camel merino cardigan

Camel is one of those seasonless colors that just work and I find myself reaching for my camel cardigan to throw over whatever else I am wearing — see #1, #6 + #7!

My absolute favorite merino cardigan is from J.CREW and sadly the style has since been discontinued but THIS ONE from EVERLANE is pretty spot on!

9. Black pointed toe flats

As much as I love heels, life gets in the way. A 4-inch stiletto doesn’t work when I’m helping clients during fittings or seasonal closet purges. Chasing after my kids is also a bit easier in a more practical pair of elegant flats. A few years ago I invested in a pair of JIMMY CHOO black pointed toe flats in classic black. Sounds like the most boring waste of a shoe purchase, but those flats are so soft, supportive and comfortable. The fact that they’re JIMMY CHOO also makes them feel a bit more special for everyday wear. I wear those shoes to death.

10. White blouse

10 style essentials for women

If I’ve done styling work with you, chances are I’ve probably recommended adding a classic white blouse to your rotation. Not just ANY white blouse, the J.CREW ENDLESS white blouse. I love it for it’s extra length that is flattering on all body types. It covers the bum so you can wear it on it’s own tunic style or use as a great layering piece in colder months. The French cuffs are a nice bonus too for a sophisticated upgrade on the ordinary white shirt.
