Summer Style Refresher

Even if the weather is not cooperating, everyone seems to be getting into a summertime mindset — or at least attempting to. I’ve already made the switch to iced-coffee beverages — clearly a sign of summer.

Let the games BEGIN.

Before we go all summa-summa-summatime (oh, old-school Will Smith, how I miss you!), I thought it would be helpful to offer a few quick summer style tips to get you started on your path towards summer goddess status.

•  Show some skin — one body part at a time

I will admit, it is such a great feeling to ditch the layers and bare some skin, but let’s not get too crazy in this department. I’ve seen way too many fashion don’ts involving women young and old showing a bit too much skin and veering into cheap looking territory.

Style is all about balance and proportion and if you’re going to expose some bare shoulders or cleavage, keep the bottom more conservative. Sorry JESSICA SIMPSON, you failed this lesson. The opposite applies as well: if you’re going to go short on the bottom, keep the top a bit more reserved.

If you haven’t tried a jumpsuit yet, I can’t recommend them enough. A beautiful jumpsuit takes all of the guesswork out of getting dressed up.  Whether a short or long version, just enough skin is always bared to keep the look classy and comfortable.

•  Keep it easy-breezy

While that majority of the year, I’m all over anything sharply structured and minimal, if there was a time to embrace flowing and feminine silhouettes summer is it. When the temperatures turn up, it’s best to select clothes that let your skin breathe and perhaps allow a little breeze of cool AC air to slip in.

You can always throw a lightweight blazer or jacket on top to keep that edge!

•  Go retro

The summer season is always the best time to experiment and get creative with your style. As a bit of encouragement, summer clothes are generally more trend driven and can be purchased for way less than the classic investment pieces you buy for the cold weather seasons. The 70’s boho inspired look is still going strong — cold-shoulder tops, flare jeans, round sunglasses and platform sandals can be found at every price point!

With the return of any retro trend, it’s easy to cross the line into costumey territory, so try to incorporate your retro piece with more current styles to keep from looking dated.
