Don’t get your hopes up, folks.
This post is not quite as racy as the title sounds, although it’s definitely right up your alley. Last week, I realized that one of my most read posts OF. ALL. TIME. is THIS.
What can I say!?
Ladies and gentlemen, you clearly enjoy your hose, tights and stockings!
So on that note, let’s talk fishnets…
What do y’all think — Bold styling or fashion faux pas?
For years, I had ditched any notion of fishnets, or stockings for that matter — I’m on Team Bare Legs all the way! It was only this past season when I started noticing that familiar black lattice weave popping up in the most unexpected ways. Whether worn as dainty sheer ankle socks, or layered under distressed denim, I’m beginning to see fishnet stockings with fresh eyes.
One of the strongest forecasted Spring ’17 trends is the shift to 80’s inspired fashion — fluorescents, one-shoulder tops, strong, sharp silhouettes, etc. It’s only natural that fishnet stocking would be part of this mix.
If we dig even further back into the style archives, we’ll find that fishnets have been causing a sartorial stir for decades. In the 1940s, actress and style icon Katherine Hepburn wore hers with structured shorts! Even back then, the interplay between casual and dressy, masculine and feminine was strong. Liz Taylor was also a fishnet stocking proponent starting in the 50’s — giving them a more sexy and feminine spin with figure hugging dresses, pencil skirts and high-waisted shorts.
To make a bold statement, select a larger scale fishnet pattern to show off with a modern DENIM MINI and your favorite pair of winter BOOTIES. If you’re not quite sold on the fishnet look, stick to small scale fishnets with a more traditional SHEATH for a unexpected twist on a wardrobe basic. Lastly, ankle socks are perhaps the most approachable way to style this look. Instead of baring your ankles this winter, reach for a delicate pair of FISHNET ANKLE SOCKS to wear with your favorite STILETTO PUMPS or PREPPY LOAFERS.
So, what do you say?
Are you a proponent of the return of fishnets and more importantly, is this something YOU would wear? I would love to hear your opinions, so please do share in the comment section below!
