What is it about that special scent you find in luxury hotels around the world?
You know the one.
The one that all of your clothes smell like as soon as you open your suitcase to unpack. It’s the same one you get a random whiff of and automatically get transported back to the time and place where you first encountered it. Right now, the sophisticated scent du jour is courtesy of THE SCHOFIELD, the latest Kimpton boutique hotel to open in downtown Cleveland.
Breathe in, breathe out.
Last week, I had the pleasure of spending the night at THE SCHOFIELD for a much needed city staycation. Even though I live less than 15 minutes away, there’s something to be said about a change of scenery to make you feel like a visitor in your own city.
(Ditching two kids with their grandparents also helps!)
The moment you hand the valet your keys, the gracious staff at THE SCHOFIELD ensure that you’re taken care of in every sense of the word. From the gorgeous melding of old and new (the building is a Victorian-era, turn-of-the-century construction!), to the spacious rooms, impeccable service and luxe amenities, no detail is overlooked. After a few recent stressful weeks, it was so nice to sit back, relax and let someone else take the lead.
What did I do during the next 24 hours?
One word: relax.
Let me break it down for you…
2 pm: Raid The Bar
PARKER’S DOWNTOWN (conveniently attached to The Schofield lobby) was the first stop of my relaxation staycation post check-in. Make sure you try their signature cocktail: The Professor — a modern spin on an Old Fashioned accented by notes of burnt orange, clove and star anise. Not only was the cocktail beautiful, but it was also delicious… and dangerous. I could have had 3 more.
4 pm: Get Your Om On
After heading upstairs to my room, I had a few hours to kill before my downtown dinner plans later that evening. I unpacked, settled in and took advantage of the in-room yoga mat and on-demand yoga classes. Over the years, working out has become a therapy of sort and it was so nice to be able to squeeze in a workout in my own time and without leaving the room!
6 pm: Wine Club
THE SCHOFIELD gets your night started right with their evening complimentary wine hour hosted in their cozy “living room.” Grab a glass, cozy up on the couch and unwind. You may not want to leave.
7 pm: Paint the town red
Or wine and gold, in the case of the Cleveland Cavaliers! The Cavs are mid-NBA Championship Finals and the city is full of energy (and the occasional Kardashian sighting). THE SCHOFIELD just happens to sit right in the middle of it all — sandwiched between Progressive Field, The Q Arena and all of downtown’s best restaurants and nightlife. As for my plans — my hubby and I took a walk and made our way down to E. 4th Street for leisurely dinner at BUTCHER + THE BREWER, followed by a nightcap (and people watching) on the rooftop of RED. Walking city streets was one of my favorite NYC pastimes and I was so happy to finally be able to do that in Cleveland!
11 pm: Nighty, night
As much fun as a night out can be, once you become a parent nothing beats a comfortable king bed with no alarm clocks (or kids) to wake you up in the morning. Throw in a glam bathroom, clawfoot soaking tub and luxury Atelier Bloem bath amenities and I’m never leaving.
8 am: Breakfast in Bed
The next morning we woke up to quiet, dark room and it took all of my will power to get out of my cozy cocoon and get my day started. Luckily for me, hot coffee service was already fired up and ready to go in the hotel lobby area. God bless you, Schofield. I grabbed a copy of the Sunday paper, filled up my cup and proceeded to veg out and bliss out.
10 am: Inner Bliss
Speaking of bliss, THE SCHOFIELD has partnered with 2 of the leading fitness studios in Cleveland — INNER BLISS YOGA + HARNESS CYCLE. Throughout the season, the hotel will be offering special events and services in collaboration with the studios. To kick off this health and wellness initiative, I was invited to take part in an Inner Bliss Yoga Class (led by Ann Richards — she’s absolutely awesome!) followed by a Harness Cycle hosted pop-up shop set up in the ballroom of the hotel. If I wasn’t already relaxed, this yoga class was definitely the icing on the cake.
Although, my sore hamstrings and obliques may beg to differ.
12 pm: Tears of Sadness
Yes, my friends, it was unfortunately time to check out… at least for now.
I’ll definitely be back.
