No Makeup Makeup

While it’s fun to get glam every once in a while, 98% of my existence is spent in a relatively casual state either with no makeup on at all, or with just enough to not scare the small children in the neighborhood.

I kid, I kid.

Seriously, though… I would describe my daily makeup look as a “no-makeup makeup.” I definitely did NOT wake up like this, but with a few strategic products and some helpful tips from the folks over at NORDSTROM, I’d like to think I #nailedit?!

The One Thing No One Told Me About Aging

aging_hair_care_extensions_natural_headerAs a society and especially as women, we are pretty obsessed with aging.

From fat zapping lasers to botox, to insane vampire facials we’re pretty much willing to do anything to keep the age charade going. I’ll be the first to admit I miss my wrinkle-free skin, perky butt and pre-baby belly button… but the one thing I never thought I’d miss is my hair.

Summer Beauty Favorites

summer_beauty_favorites_header

In theory, summer beauty should be about effortless ease… at least that’s what all of the magazines are selling with their bronzed and glowing model spreads.

In reality, summer beauty probably takes about 1000x more work and effort than any other beauty routine during the calendar year. From hair removal to sweat prevention, frizz control to faux tans, real summer beauty is way more complicated than we as consumers have been fooled to think.

Yves Saint Laurent Glossy Stain

YSL Rouge Pur Couture Vernis À Lèvres Glossy Stain

I guess you could say I’ve been in a bit of a makeup mood lately.

Generally, I’m pretty minimal when it comes to my makeup look and tend to stay allegiant to my favorite products that I’ve discovered over the years (#rideordie). Remember my recent ode to CHANEL BOY? My love affair is still going hot and heavy, by the way. This may be considered cheating a bit on my “Boy-friend,” but I consider this a whole new category of love.

The lip stain.

One of the primary reasons I have been hesitant to try anything new (or colorful) on my lips is that it comes off so quickly — so why bother, right? I hate having to reapply or remembering to bring along my lipstick/gloss, so the effort involved in crafting a bold lip is just not worth it.

That’s all changed though…

I recently received a small sample of a YVES SAINT LAURENT VERNIS À LÈVRES GLOSSY STAIN that had been sitting untouched in my drawer for at least 3 months. Yesterday, intrigued by the claim that this is a gloss-like lip product that actually LASTS, I gave it a whirl with no expectations. The small felt-tip wand was easy to use and left behind a layer of glossy, medium-sheer color as I swiped my lips — I used COLOR 5 ROUGE VINTAGE — a deeper rose-hued shade with berry undertones.

After my early morning application, I spent the morning at 2 different appointments and a sushi lunch. When I finally returned home around 3pm, I looked in the mirror and was shocked to see that the color was still going strong! Granted, it was no longer the glossy finish I saw when I first applied, but what remained was a pretty pink hued stain that was deeper and brighter than my natural lip color, yet still looked natural. Best of all, my lips were not dry or cracked as other lip stains tend to do.

So there you have it.

Apparently, I’m polyamorous when it comes to my makeup and have already purchased a full size tube of the Yves Saint Laurent GLOSSY STAIN.

Chanel Boy Lipstick

What’s the old saying – “You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone?”

Well, mine was gone in the back of a Dublin taxi cab and as I soon as I realized that it was missing from my bag, a deep feeling of sadness and regret set in. My beloved Chanel Boy lipstick was MIA and as replaceable as lipstick is, it still pained me to lose my favorite cosmetic indulgence and go-to lip color.

Oh, and p.s. — I HATE losing things.

chanel-boy-lipstick-rouge-coco-shine

I first read about Chanel’s ROUGE COCO SHINE HYDRATING SHEER LIPSHINE in (54) BOY a few years back in an online beauty forum and was intrigued by all of the glowing reviews. What was most interesting was that there was a shade of lipstick that could flatter almost every skin tone and nationality of woman who seemed tried it. Better yet, this single shade of lipstick was ironically as far off from “Boy”-ish when applied – subtle, delicate and just a prettier rosewood (with a hint of copper fleck!) version of your natural lip color is the better way to describe it. It also happens to have a faint rose/floral smell when applied — an added bonus.

When I realized how significantly I was attached to a silly lipstick, I knew that this would be a great product to share with you all. Less than 24 hours after losing my “Boy,” I found myself standing at the Chanel counter at Brown Thomas — the Irish equivalent of Bergdorf Goodman with fingers crossed they had my favorite shade in stock.

They did… whew.

CHANEL’S BEAUTY line has been a cult favorite for years — if you’ve never tested out any of their products, I highly recommend you do so starting with the subtle ROUGE COCO SHINE (it comes in 20+ shades!). You’ll soon become addicted.

A little history lesson: “Boy” is the nickname of Arthur Capel, the love of Coco Chanel’s life, her partner and avid supporter in all her successful ventures. Clearly, at the heart of every great product or business is love!

I’m finally back stateside this morning with my “Boy” and I’ve made a personal vow to never let him go again.

I highly recommend you do the same.

Spring 2016 Nail Polish Trends

Spring 2016 Nail Polish Trends Header

Today is a very special day.

“Why?” you ask…

Today I discovered the mystical golden unicorn of the nail world. After almost 4 years of struggling to find a Cleveland based nail technician that can complete a pristine mani/pedi combo in under 2 hours without drawing blood, I found her. She actually exists! Her name is Sandy and she is spectacular.

All joking aside, a talented nail technician who you trust is high up there on the list of things every woman should have in her life… right behind an amazing hair stylist and a thorough and efficient (because no one wants to be on THAT table longer than necessary!) waxing specialist.

The modern woman’s glam squad.

Sandy managed to be speedy on application, yet meticulous in technique at the same time. In under 90 minutes I walked out of the nail salon with perfectly polished tips and toes and a new appreciation for quality handiwork. There was no aggressive cuticle hacking and no rough edges — only the most flattering spring-ready shades of taupe I would have never picked on my own.

Which brings us to today’s post… While unfortunately I can’t send Sandy directly to you, I CAN pass along some of her spring color selection wisdom as well as some of the other spring runway nail polish shades that are going to be your new favorites!

Pink Quartz: 1 // 2 // 3 // 4

Spicy Reds: 5 // 6 // 7

Grey Storm: 9 // 10 // 11

Liquid Metal: 8 // 12 // 13

Serenity Blue: 14 // 15 // 16 // 17

Did you notice PANTONE’s 2016 COLORS OF THE YEAR peeking through? You’ll be seeing a ton of Pink Quartz + Serenity Blue making their appearance in everything beauty, fashion and decor!

Sandy helped me pick really clean and easy neutrals for my own mani/pedi situation. We went with OPI Tiramisu for Two on my hands (#1) — I used the longer lasting gel formula. It’s a really pretty opaque, pinky beige, best described as the color of coffee with a lot of cream! On my toes, she recommended going slightly darker with, OPI A French Quarter For Your Thoughts (#9). I would describe it as a warm grey with purply, taupe undertones.

Do YOU have any favorite nail polish colors for spring?!

My Go-To Hair Products

Every now and again, I get an e-mail or blog comment asking about my hair care routine and products. It’s always a good day when that happens because honestly, I stink at hair… and I’m lazy… but mostly I stink at hair.

Any good hair days can be attributed to a few key products, easy styling techniques picked up from You Tube tutorials (THIS ONE is my favorite for a textured lob like mine) and a great cut.

Today’s post is all about the hair care tools and products that I use on the reg… my go-tos.

L’Oreal EverPure Sulfate Free Color-Care System — After years of going cheap on shampoo and conditioner, I discovered this really reasonably priced (like under $7 each!) product line from L’Oreal. Originally, I was looking for a sulfate-free formula that wouldn’t strip my hair of its natural oils — but hey, I’ll take some color protection! Take that, grey. My hair has never felt softer.

• Salon Care Alligator Clips — Great for sectioning while heat styling, or just throwing your hair back without those annoying creases or dents. One of those inexpensive beauty supply purchases that once you have, you can’t imagine going without!

• Chi Flat Iron — I’m not even going to divulge how long I’ve been using this iron. It’s the true OG. It still gives me the best and longest lasting waves.

• Davines Oi Absolute Beautifying Potion — I’m on year #3 of being an Oi devotee. Just one pump of this oil formula smoothes out frizz and/or protects my hair during heat styling.

• Davines This Is An Invisible No Gas Spray — One of the only hair sprays I’ve found that doesn’t leave my hair sticky, stiff or looking like a beauty pageant bouffant. The superfine mist gives even, light coverage with medium hold.

• Sachajuan Ocean Mist — When it comes to creating “lived in” texture on clean hair, nothing beats this spray. It’s the closest thing to beach hair I’ve been able to replicate and small, random fact… it’s a product used on J.Crew models both in print catalogs, as well as runway!

• Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Cream — This product gives me just the right amount of soft hold with the perfect halo of shine. This keeps my tousled lob from going too messy and gives a smooth blowout shiny bounce!

• Oscar Blandi Dry Shampoo Spray — With my workout schedule, I try to keep the hair washing to only 2-3x a week. In between washes, this dry shampoo spray works wonders, smells divine and leaves no white residue.

If you’ve used any of these goodies or decide to give them a try, I’d love to know what you think!
