There is something totally zen about perusing the aisles of a drugstore. I could literally spend hours walking up and down those aisles inspecting the latest and greatest in beauty products.
Back in the day, it was my local, NYC 9th Avenue Duane Reade. These days, I’m more of a WALGREENS girl. Oh, and don’t even get me started on the TARGET beauty department! All these assorted drugstore beauty destinations have worked diligently to clear my head (and my occasional hormonal breakouts) and stock my bathroom with an arsenal of effective beauty products that could rival any high-end luxury brand.
Since launching The Heart’s Delight almost 4 years ago, I’ve tried more beauty and makeup products than I can count. Some of have been good, some have been, well, not so good.
While I’m not a beauty professional by any means, trying out all of these products has forced me to learn some of the ins-and-outs of the beauty world, figure out what actually works and most importantly learn how to use it correctly! Luckily, I’ve met some very bright and talented people along the way who can help me navigate this process.
While it’s fun to get glam every once in a while, 98% of my existence is spent in a relatively casual state either with no makeup on at all, or with just enough to not scare the small children in the neighborhood.
I kid, I kid.
Seriously, though… I would describe my daily makeup look as a “no-makeup makeup.” I definitely did NOT wake up like this, but with a few strategic products and some helpful tips from the folks over at NORDSTROM, I’d like to think I #nailedit?!
As a society and especially as women, we are pretty obsessed with aging.
From fat zapping lasers to botox, to insane vampire facials we’re pretty much willing to do anything to keep the age charade going. I’ll be the first to admit I miss my wrinkle-free skin, perky butt and pre-baby belly button… but the one thing I never thought I’d miss is my hair.
In theory, summer beauty should be about effortless ease… at least that’s what all of the magazines are selling with their bronzed and glowing model spreads.
In reality, summer beauty probably takes about 1000x more work and effort than any other beauty routine during the calendar year. From hair removal to sweat prevention, frizz control to faux tans, real summer beauty is way more complicated than we as consumers have been fooled to think.
I guess you could say I’ve been in a bit of a makeup mood lately.
Generally, I’m pretty minimal when it comes to my makeup look and tend to stay allegiant to my favorite products that I’ve discovered over the years (#rideordie). Remember my recent ode to CHANEL BOY? My love affair is still going hot and heavy, by the way. This may be considered cheating a bit on my “Boy-friend,” but I consider this a whole new category of love.
One of the primary reasons I have been hesitant to try anything new (or colorful) on my lips is that it comes off so quickly — so why bother, right? I hate having to reapply or remembering to bring along my lipstick/gloss, so the effort involved in crafting a bold lip is just not worth it.
That’s all changed though…
I recently received a small sample of a YVES SAINT LAURENT VERNIS À LÈVRES GLOSSY STAIN that had been sitting untouched in my drawer for at least 3 months. Yesterday, intrigued by the claim that this is a gloss-like lip product that actually LASTS, I gave it a whirl with no expectations. The small felt-tip wand was easy to use and left behind a layer of glossy, medium-sheer color as I swiped my lips — I used COLOR 5 ROUGE VINTAGE — a deeper rose-hued shade with berry undertones.
After my early morning application, I spent the morning at 2 different appointments and a sushi lunch. When I finally returned home around 3pm, I looked in the mirror and was shocked to see that the color was still going strong! Granted, it was no longer the glossy finish I saw when I first applied, but what remained was a pretty pink hued stain that was deeper and brighter than my natural lip color, yet still looked natural. Best of all, my lips were not dry or cracked as other lip stains tend to do.
So there you have it.
Apparently, I’m polyamorous when it comes to my makeup and have already purchased a full size tube of the Yves Saint Laurent GLOSSY STAIN.

What’s the old saying – “You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone?”
Well, mine was gone in the back of a Dublin taxi cab and as I soon as I realized that it was missing from my bag, a deep feeling of sadness and regret set in. My beloved Chanel Boy lipstick was MIA and as replaceable as lipstick is, it still pained me to lose my favorite cosmetic indulgence and go-to lip color.
Oh, and p.s. — I HATE losing things.
I first read about Chanel’s ROUGE COCO SHINE HYDRATING SHEER LIPSHINE in (54) BOY a few years back in an online beauty forum and was intrigued by all of the glowing reviews. What was most interesting was that there was a shade of lipstick that could flatter almost every skin tone and nationality of woman who seemed tried it. Better yet, this single shade of lipstick was ironically as far off from “Boy”-ish when applied – subtle, delicate and just a prettier rosewood (with a hint of copper fleck!) version of your natural lip color is the better way to describe it. It also happens to have a faint rose/floral smell when applied — an added bonus.
When I realized how significantly I was attached to a silly lipstick, I knew that this would be a great product to share with you all. Less than 24 hours after losing my “Boy,” I found myself standing at the Chanel counter at Brown Thomas — the Irish equivalent of Bergdorf Goodman with fingers crossed they had my favorite shade in stock.
They did… whew.
CHANEL’S BEAUTY line has been a cult favorite for years — if you’ve never tested out any of their products, I highly recommend you do so starting with the subtle ROUGE COCO SHINE (it comes in 20+ shades!). You’ll soon become addicted.
A little history lesson: “Boy” is the nickname of Arthur Capel, the love of Coco Chanel’s life, her partner and avid supporter in all her successful ventures. Clearly, at the heart of every great product or business is love!
