It should be of no surprise that the sleeper shoe of the past two seasons come to us directly from the chicest of granny fashion: Chanel.
Women young and old flock to the French designer for a taste of the classic, refined and impeccably crafted. I’m pretty sure THESE SHOES check all of those boxes — for a fraction of the designer Chanel price.
While it’s fun to get glam every once in a while, 98% of my existence is spent in a relatively casual state either with no makeup on at all, or with just enough to not scare the small children in the neighborhood.
I kid, I kid.
Seriously, though… I would describe my daily makeup look as a “no-makeup makeup.” I definitely did NOT wake up like this, but with a few strategic products and some helpful tips from the folks over at NORDSTROM, I’d like to think I #nailedit?!
In theory, summer beauty should be about effortless ease… at least that’s what all of the magazines are selling with their bronzed and glowing model spreads.
In reality, summer beauty probably takes about 1000x more work and effort than any other beauty routine during the calendar year. From hair removal to sweat prevention, frizz control to faux tans, real summer beauty is way more complicated than we as consumers have been fooled to think.
After months of wearing heavy boots, booties and sneakers it’s nice to let your feet have some fun in the way of light and colorful shoe options. The espadrille is one of the most classic warm weather shoe styles and while it’s taken me a while to grow my appreciation for the woven soled shoe, I’m totally on board now.
Here’s a little secret: I don’t own any espadrilles just yet! Shhhhh….
My sudden urge to add a pair of these summer beauties started where most good things start — the internet! I saw so many street style photos of women looking absolutely chic and lovely in their espadrilles that I was tempted to finally try on a pair. So I did. These VINCE ESPADRILLE WEDGES, in fact… and they felt like butter on my feet. The leather was so soft and the woven platform added so much cushion to my step that I resisted taking them off.
From trendier platform styles, to the more traditional slip on there is an espadrille style for everyone out there regardless of age or lifestyle. Even CHANEL got into the espadrille game last summer with their classic take on the style! A word of advice: if you’re considering purchasing the CHANEL version of the espadrille style GET THEM NOW. They sold out so fast last year that they were practically an impossible score once June rolled around.
But alas, not all of us can stomach the Chanel designer price tag — and we don’t have to! Check out my favorite espadrilles that ring in at prices that are a bit more eh, palatable for the summer shoe staple.

What’s the old saying – “You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone?”
Well, mine was gone in the back of a Dublin taxi cab and as I soon as I realized that it was missing from my bag, a deep feeling of sadness and regret set in. My beloved Chanel Boy lipstick was MIA and as replaceable as lipstick is, it still pained me to lose my favorite cosmetic indulgence and go-to lip color.
Oh, and p.s. — I HATE losing things.
I first read about Chanel’s ROUGE COCO SHINE HYDRATING SHEER LIPSHINE in (54) BOY a few years back in an online beauty forum and was intrigued by all of the glowing reviews. What was most interesting was that there was a shade of lipstick that could flatter almost every skin tone and nationality of woman who seemed tried it. Better yet, this single shade of lipstick was ironically as far off from “Boy”-ish when applied – subtle, delicate and just a prettier rosewood (with a hint of copper fleck!) version of your natural lip color is the better way to describe it. It also happens to have a faint rose/floral smell when applied — an added bonus.
When I realized how significantly I was attached to a silly lipstick, I knew that this would be a great product to share with you all. Less than 24 hours after losing my “Boy,” I found myself standing at the Chanel counter at Brown Thomas — the Irish equivalent of Bergdorf Goodman with fingers crossed they had my favorite shade in stock.
They did… whew.
CHANEL’S BEAUTY line has been a cult favorite for years — if you’ve never tested out any of their products, I highly recommend you do so starting with the subtle ROUGE COCO SHINE (it comes in 20+ shades!). You’ll soon become addicted.
A little history lesson: “Boy” is the nickname of Arthur Capel, the love of Coco Chanel’s life, her partner and avid supporter in all her successful ventures. Clearly, at the heart of every great product or business is love!
SHOP THE LOOK: (I’ve included some similar Chanel “Boy” dupes for you, as well! )
I’m finally back stateside this morning with my “Boy” and I’ve made a personal vow to never let him go again.
In full disclosure, this is not something I think about a lot but with Valentine’s Day just around the corner and THIS recent post by one of my favorite bloggers on my screen, I couldn’t help but start dreaming up the perfect date night scenario and my dream date outfit to go with it.
Well, my husband obviously. This summer we’re celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary.
I can’t believe it…
(Actually, I can believe it but geez, does time fly. I have 2 kids and a developing crows feet situation to remind me of that.)
I had a really hard time narrowing this down!
After some serious thought, I think I envision a city scenario in the fall. I’d even go so far as saying, it might be New York City. I’m not sentimental about a lot of things, but NYC just gets me.
Everything and nothing.
We’d start the day at one of my favorite West Village cafes (CAFE CLUNY is fabulous!), where I’d order all of the bread. There is nothing better than artisan baked goods with a side of caffeine… because obviously.
After the professional carb loading session we’d wander the morning away — perhaps my favorite city activity of all time. A few downtown gallery stops followed by a few glasses of wine with lunch. BALTHAZAR is still one of my long-time favorites… the raw bar is fantastic. More recently I’ve been loving ABC KITCHEN— can’t recommend it enough especially if you like a side of home design with your Jean George meal.
A nap would most definitely fit into the day’s agenda.
Hooray for Thursday and for a short work week! Anyone else need a cocktail?
Well, in case you do, here’s the perfect night-out outfit for you! Remember the silk shell we discussed yesterday? It’s back. This time, with an edgier (out-of-office) agenda.
WHAT I’M WEARING:
Vince TOP (old; THIS is similar) // A.L.C. LEATHER PANTS (a STEAL if you can still score your size + a SPLURGE) // Tania Spinelli SANDALS (sold out; THESE are similar) // Chanel BAG (here’s a similar SPLURGE + STEAL!)
I left the top untucked for this look to keep the skinny LEATHER PANTS from overwhelming the outfit. It’s all about proportion: skinny on the bottom = looser fit up top!
The lace-up, studded SANDALS were the no-brainer finishing touch to amp up the sex-appeal and really get the outfit party ready.
Speaking of parties, NEW YORK FASHION WEEK kicks off today with some of my favorite designers hitting the runways: OHNE TITEL, BCBGMAXAZRIA & ERIN FEATHERSTON to name a few! Follow along in the week to come as I break down some of the best looks on the catwalk as well as some major trend forecasting for Spring 2016. If you’re feeling left out of the fashion fun (Fashion FOMO?!), make sure you follow along!
Feeling better today? It’s January 2nd and it’s officially time to get off the couch, put on pants without an elastic waist and kick off our year!
After close to two weeks on a “staycation” schedule, getting up early this morning was BRUTAL. At least I have a few days to transition the kids back to their normal routines before we’re faced with cold, dark mornings waiting for the school bus and the return of those dreaded under-eye circles. To that point, I thought I’d start the year off with a critical component of my daily beauty routine- eye makeup!
While I’ve touched on some of my favorite beauty products in the past (HERE, HERE & HERE), today’s goal is to breakdown how I use those magic sticks and potions to get that “I’m wide awake, just ran 5 miles, baked fresh muffins and feel fantastic!” look. My goal was to create that no-makeup, makeup that fools them all.
You’ll also need a large powder brush, small eyeshadow brush, a few Q-Tips (for any touch-ups) and your immaculately clean fingers, or makeup sponges if you prefer!
Starting with a clean and moisturized face*, apply the Dr. Jart BB cream lightly using your fingers, or a sponge applicator to get the most even coverage. Pat a small amount of BB cream on lids and undereyes, blending well. Using a fluffy powder brush, lightly dust Laura Mercier Foundation Powder across your face and lids. This will help set your BB cream, specifically around the eye area.
* Ummm, hello pores?! Wow. It may be time for a facial. That, or a much better filter on my photos. Yikes.
Using your small eyeshadow brush, pat on your Chanel eyeshadow powder from lash line to crease, blending lightly.
Using the Stila liquid liner, use the fine tip applicator to make small dots/dashes as close to your lash line as possible, starting from the inner corner of your eye and working outward.. I also try to apply some liner in between the lashes, giving the appearance of an overall fuller lash. By making the small dots, you don’t need to be concerned about drawing on a perfectly straight line, just follow the natural curve of your lashes.
Apply the Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat highlighter to a) your brow bone b) the inner corner of your eye c) the top of your cheekbone. Use your fingers or a clean sponge to blend well.
Line the water line/inner rim of your eye with the Sephora white liner followed by a light coat of mascara on both top and lower lashes.
That’s it… You’re done!
Subtle, clean, refined and casual enough for every day. Add a little blush, a swipe of balm and you’re ready for anything. If you’re feeling more adventurous, this is a perfect neutral eye to complement a bright red or pink lip! So feel free to stay up extra late and watch those last 2 seasons of ‘Homeland‘ you may have missed. If you follow my five easy steps to bright eyes, no one will know our “dark” secret.
