Building a functional (and FUN) wardrobe is all about mixing and matching — colors, prints, style and price points.
If your entire wardrobe is designer — what fun is that?
The items that make any wardrobe or outfit most special are those unexpected pieces that bring it all together. These are the pieces that will attract attention and compliments. Fortunately for you, these things don’t have to be expensive. Actually, the most stylish women in the world are the ones who can take a $10 top and make it look like a million bucks.
There is something totally zen about perusing the aisles of a drugstore. I could literally spend hours walking up and down those aisles inspecting the latest and greatest in beauty products.
Back in the day, it was my local, NYC 9th Avenue Duane Reade. These days, I’m more of a WALGREENS girl. Oh, and don’t even get me started on the TARGET beauty department! All these assorted drugstore beauty destinations have worked diligently to clear my head (and my occasional hormonal breakouts) and stock my bathroom with an arsenal of effective beauty products that could rival any high-end luxury brand.
It should be of no surprise that the sleeper shoe of the past two seasons come to us directly from the chicest of granny fashion: Chanel.
Women young and old flock to the French designer for a taste of the classic, refined and impeccably crafted. I’m pretty sure THESE SHOES check all of those boxes — for a fraction of the designer Chanel price.
(Thank you, Cyndi Lauper & Sirius/XM 80’s Channel for getting that song stuck in my head.)
When we see celebrities, fashion editors and street style fashionistas, we’re often tempted to say that they can look as good as they do because of their unlimited funds. “Real” people could never pull that style off without taking a second mortgage on their home, or going without food for a few weeks.
I’ve practically been drooling over them since I spotted them come down the runway last year. Ok, if we’re being honest I’ve been surprisingly into ALL things Gucci from the BELTS, to the LOAFERS and to this BAG that I just can’t get out of my head.
A blue button down may not be the most sartorially exciting piece in your closet, but man-oh-man… can it work!
I’m all about those versatile, crossover pieces in your wardrobe that you can take from day-to-night, work-to-dinner — essentially, never take off! No one does it better than the blue button down though. Next time you’re thinking about what to wear to that coffee date or casual outing, stop your panic and just meet me right back here.
Got your online shopping fingers limbered up and ready?
(You’re going to need them…)
SHOPBOP has started stocking it’s fall SALE department and there are some fashion finds that are just too good not to share. We here at THD (and by “we”, I mean ME!) love a good online sale and this one is ideal for filling in those fall style gaps. You know, those final pieces to complete your look for the season?
These late sunsets are like a double edged sword. On the one hand, it’s so nice to be actually able to enjoy the extra daylight hours and really pack in the fun and activities. On the other hand, the longer days and warm weather make me want to be out and about and enjoy my summer vs. sitting home in front of my computer blogging.
One of the best things about summer (aside from patio drinking, extended daylight hours, beach time, etc.) is the fact that summer styles are inherently less expensive than their cold weather counterparts. Whether that’s due to less physical material, less expensive textiles, or just cheaper fabrication — I’m not sure, but I’m definitely not complaining.
This morning I want to tackle some of what are sure to be this season’s biggest trends and show you how to successfully score those summer trends for less! While the designer versions can provide the inspiration, I’ve picked budget friendly dupes (all UNDER $100) to keep your patio cocktail fund intact.
Have you scooped up an off the shoulder top or dress yet? TIBI is probably the brand that comes to mind when thinking about this summer friendly style. A quick PINTEREST search reveals hundreds of street-style shots of this simple, poplin off-the-shoulder top — called the ‘NEO‘. At close to $300, it’s not exactly a shirt I’d run out to purchase (although I do love it so!). Luckily for us, there are alternatives!
It should come as no surprise that fringe is still in play when it comes to summer style — is there anything more fun that a little swingy fringe for a night out? Well, actually… poms may give fringe a run for the money. I shared some of my favorite pom styles a few days back — you can read all about it HERE.
AQUAZZURA “WILD THING” might be the pioneer when it comes to nailing this trend — always imitated, never duplicated. However, if you’re not exactly in the mood to splurge on an $800 pair of shoes, I’ve got some amazing style dupes that will give you an identical look for way, way less!
Have you guys heard of MARYSIA SWIM? I started following the brand a few years ago and was obsessed with this simple swimwear. What made it so special? It was the unique scalloped edging detail! Unfortunately, the price tag was not exactly ideal. I have this thing against spending a fortune on swimsuits that will just get faded, worn and stretched after a season of wear and tear. Luckily for all of us, other designers have jumped on the scalloped edge bandwagon and we now have less expensive alternatives to meet all of our summer trend needs!
For this summer’s iteration of the boho style, enter micro pleats and layers of ruffles. These floaty details will update any silhouette and help a dress or separates skim against the body without subtly masking any imperfections. The ruffles are a bit more traditional and feminine, while the structure of the micro pleats add a bit more modern edge — either option looks great, so pick the look that suits your personal style best!
First things first, stripes NEVER go out of style. They’re the most essential and versatile pattern you’ll find in a woman’s wardrobe. This summer, there’s been a collective movement by designers towards a vertical variety of striping inspired by traditional, men’s shirts. I’ve been seeing the thin, pale stripes make their way on everything from casual BOYFRIEND SHIRTS, to dresses and even wide leg trousers.
